Careers in Instructional Designing

Instructional designing involves the development of highly interactive and user-friendly learning material for students from across the world. Today, with many foreign and Indian e-learning companies offering customized e-learning products to overseas markets, there is a growing demand for instructional designers (IDs). And as more and more outsourcing work pours in their demand will only go up.

The e-learning content development process involves course designing, storyboard, media, and then programming.

Role of the IDs

The instructional designer plays a very significant role in the development of e-learning material. The job requires as much aptitude as skills. As this is a technology-driven industry you should have the ability to learn quickly and constantly. Beginners could join as content writers/content developers/junior instructional designers. As you gain more experience you can become a senior instructional designer, instructional analyst and then instructional solutions architects. Schools, colleges and health care systems are places that are increasingly recruiting IDs.

Demands of the job

You must have excellent writing skills. The ideal candidate should have a genuine interest in helping people learn and process information. You must be able to create user-friendly courses and modules for learners of different levels.

Remuneration

The pay packages are good. Beginners may start at Rs 1.5 - 2 lakhs per annum. The highest salary a person can get is close to Rs 15 lakh per annum.
