Students who have completed their 10 + 2 or its equivalent can apply for certificate or diploma courses. The course duration may vary from six months to one year. Graduates with 50 percent marks in any discipline from a recognized Indian University can seek admission to degree courses (B.Lib.) in library science. Some universities also require applicants to have some previous experience in a recognized library. Students who have completed B.Lib. can apply for M.Lib. courses. The degree and post-degree courses in Library Science are of one-year duration. A typical course in Library and Information Science will teach students topics like management of library and information centres, basic computer applications and other related subjects. Job prospectsLibrary science offers excellent job prospects for the deserving candidate. Today a large number of posts are lying vacant in many institutes across the country due to the non-availability of deserving and right candidates. Young personnel who are well versed in IT skills as well as having a degree in library science have better job prospects. You can find jobs with both public and private libraries and remuneration is very good. To join a college or University as a librarian, an applicant has to pass the UGC-NET examination conducted by UGC. Professionals having post-degree qualifications can join world renowned institutions like the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) or the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). |
