Things you should know if you are interested in a global MBA

Who can opt for an MBA?

For an entry into an MBA program, a good degree in any subject is acceptable. However, students with a business degree will definitely have an edge over others from non-business backgrounds.

Should I be good in mathematics?

MBA programs usually give greater importance to mathematics, statistics and accounting. So if you only have limited mathematical skills, you may struggle. It will be a good idea for you to attend refresher courses in disciplines such as calculus.

Work Experience

Most business schools require applicants to have had some work experience before joining the MBA program. This work experience need not necessarily be business-related. Up to one or two years of experience in any field will do.

I am interested in a global MBA. What should I do?

Most students interested in pursuing a global MBA will have to take the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT). Some schools, however, do not require it. They conduct their own tests. Today nearly 2000 business schools and 1800 programs around the world use the GMAT scores to decide whether an applicant is eligible to enter their MBA program.

The Scores

The maximum achievable GMAT score is 800. Most leading B-schools require you to have a GMAT score of 600-650. Other schools may accept those with a GMAT score as low as 500. Most B-schools do not specify the GMAT scores you should have, but they do have a cut-off point in mind.

The GMAT score does play a crucial role in determining your eligibility for an MBA program, but it is not the be-all and end-all. Your academic records, references and your performance in the interview are all equally important. The GMAT only assesses an applicant’s potential academic performance. It measures your verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills. It doesn’t measure your knowledge of business and job skills, or your levels of motivation and creativity.

The GMAT

Two analytical writing topics begin the test. You have 30 minutes for each of them. The quantitative section will have 37 sections. You have 75 minutes to answer them. The verbal ability section will have 41 questions. They need to be answered in 75 minutes.

There are two optional ten minute breaks. The verbal and quantitative sections are computer adaptive. The two analytical writing questions are not computer adaptive, but they still need to be keyed into the computer. The GMAT exam is offered throughout the year all over the world. You can use your passport or driving license as identity proof.

Do I require special training to crack GMAT?

GMAT training and preparation centers are easily found everywhere. If you have excellent verbal and mathematical skills, you will probably be able to do without special coaching. But still, the training is useful and essential considering the peculiarity and uniqueness of the test.
