Conjunctions

Read the following sentences:

Alice wrote the letters and Peter posted them.
He is poor but he is happy.

In sentence 1, the word and joins the clauses ‘Alice wrote the letters’ and ‘Peter posted them’. In sentence 2, the word but joins the clauses ‘He is poor’ and ‘He is happy’. These words are called conjunctions. A conjunction is a word or phrase which joins together words or clauses.
