Nobel Prize for PhysicsJapanese scientists Toshihide Maskawa and Makoto Kobayashi shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with US scientist Yoichiro Nambu. Nobel Prize for EconomicsPaul Krugman of the United States won the 2008 Nobel Prize for Economics. Nobel Prize for Physiology or MedicineGerman scientist Harald zur Hausen shared the 2008 Nobel Prize for medicine with French scientists Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier. Harald zur Hausen won the award for his discovery that the human papilloma viruses (HPV) cause cervical cancer. Françoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier were given the honour for their discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus. Physics NobelUS scientist Yoichiro Nambu shared the 2008 Nobel Prize for physics with Japanese scientists Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa. Yoichiro Nambu won the award for "the discovery of the mechanism of spontaneous broken symmetry in subatomic physics". The Japanese scientists won the award for "the discovery of the origin of the broken symmetry which predicts the existence of at least three families of quarks in nature". Chemistry NobelUS scientists Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie, and Roger Tsien shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for the discovery of a glowing jellyfish protein that makes cells, tissues, and organs light up. Literature NobelFrench author Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
