University of Western Australia

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is the oldest and most prestigious university in Western Australia. It was founded in 1911. The University is known for the excellent academic environment it offers. UWA offers courses in the following disciplines.

Students can obtain the following levels of qualification at the University of Western Australia: Diploma, Doctoral degree, Masters Degree, Graduate diploma and bachelor degree.

Campus

The UWA has a number of foreign students particularly those from South East Asia. In 2008, the University had 3,958 international students, part of a total student body of over 19,000.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement varies depending on the course. The applicants need to check with the university for the scores and subjects required for entry into any particular course, or consult the individual course leaflets. English proficiency is one of the preliminary requirements. A GCE ‘O’ level English with a grade of C6 or higher, a TOEFL score of 550 or higher, a pass in the university’s English competency test, an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no individual component less than 6.0 or a pass in matriculation English in Australia is necessary.

UWA’s academic year comprises two semesters. Semester 1 runs from February to June. Semester 2 runs from July to November.

UWA offers both on campus and off campus accommodation. Housing officers are employed to assist students in finding off-campus accommodation.

Scholarships

The University offers a limited number of scholarships for meritorious students. Foreign students too can apply for scholarships and grants if they meet certain qualifications. Further information can be obtained from the UWA Scholarship Office.
